Prerequisite: Must be 6yrs. or older; No experience necessary
This class is a 1.5 hour climbing session, in which we provide instructors to belay participants, and provide helpful instruction.
Class Schedule: Every Sunday (10:30am - 12:00pm)
Class Time: 1 ½ hours
To reserve: Pre-payment is necessary. Call the gym to reseve your spot. We can not accomodate walk-ins. We require 24 hour notice to cancel or reschedule.
Student/Instructor ratio: 6 to 1.
The New Jersey Rock Gym is once again offering our exciting and challenging Summer Mini-Camp for boys and girls ages 7-16.
The 8-week summer session will begin the week of July 1 and concludes August 23, 2019. Campers enroll for a minimum of 4 days over the 8-week period. These days can be consecutive or non-consecutive.
Camp hours are Monday through Friday 9:30am to 1:30pm (no early morning drop-offs). Each day will consist of 2 1/2 hours of climbing, 1 hour of Sports, and 1/2 hour for lunch. All equipment will be supplied for both the rock climbing and sports fitness programs
The Climbing Program focuses on proper equipment use, basic climbing techniques and safety while building strength, balance, flexibility, concentration and problem solving. Campers will gain experience in two styles of climbing (top rope and bouldering) utilizing the most innovative climbing structures in the Northeast. NJ Rock gym's professional staff conducts this highly instructional program.
The Sports Program, is all about learning and fun, with sports like soccer, volleyball, tug-of-war, relay races, basketball, kickball, and badminton. The program also includes cooperative games which leads to a better understanding of structured sports and teamwork. Campers learn the basic rules for each activity and increase their physical strength, awareness and health while participating.
Special Accommodations for Vacation Schedules. Campers may enroll for consecutive and non-consecutive weeks.

This class is designed for those who have had no prior climbing and/or belaying experience. Students will learn the basic skills to get them started climbing indoors on top-rope including gym etiquette, harness use, knot tying, commands, belaying and lowering. After completion of this class, students will be prepared for NJRG's Top-Rope Certification Test.
Class Includes: Gear Rental, lesson, and pass to climb for the balance of the day.
Class Schedule: Mondays (7:00pm-9:00pm), Saturdays and Sundays (10:00am - 12:00pm; 1:00pm-3:00pm)
Class Time: 1 ½ - 2 hours, depending on number of students.

Adult Technique 101
This session focuses on techniques that allow you to move up the wall with the least amount of energy. You will be able to climb longer and harder and avoid forearm pump by using these skills.
Introduced during session 1 are: warming up, how to grip a hold, foot work, stemming, back stepping, mantle, flagging.
During the class the instructor will help each student perfect their technique and to avoid techniques that are not productive. This will avoid developing bad habits that are hard to correct. The instructor will share ways to train and avoid injuries.
Adult Technique 102
This session begins with a review of the first session followed by some easy climbs. During the climbs the instructor will observe the climbers to see which techniques need additional practive before introducing new techniques.
Techniques introduced during session 2 are: warming up, smearing, flagging, layback, hand smear, drop-knee, dyno, heal hook, how to attack overhangs.
During the rest of class time climbers will work on the weak link theory of training. This means identifying a technique that they do not do well and working on it.
Details: The classes are both 2 hours long from 7:00pm to 9:00pm and limited to six adults. You must be top rope certified and advanced registration is required.

This class will provide you with details on climbing movement and introduce you to activities and practices that build a solid foundation of climbing fitness and technical skills. Techniques introduced are how to grip holds, read routes, foot work, steming,back stepping, and more.
Class includes: Gear rental (harness and shoes)
Class times: 75 minutes
2 person minimum to run class. Call for reservations and dates of class.
Prerequisite: Top rope certified, 1 year climbing experience, climbing 5.9+ in the gym.
Lead Belay Technique:Participants will learn, feeding out rope to climber, rope management, and how to give a dynamic belay.
Lead Climbing Technique:Participants will learn, movement around the rope, risk management, and proper clipping.

Prerequisite: For ages 5-14; No experience necessary
Participants will learn climbing technique, knot-tying, top-roping, bouldering, and climbing safety under the supervision of experienced NJRG instructors. Classes are kept small to no more than four students per instructor. Classes are offered after school hours and on Saturday mornings. Classes are organized into 8-week sessions. Children can take class one or two days a week. This is a great way to teach children how to climb in a safe and friendly environment, and promote physical fitness and problem solving. (TEMPORARILY POSTPONED DUE TO THE PANDEMIC) For kids, we offer instructional climbing lessons after school and on Saturdays with levels ranging from beginner to advanced. For kids who want to compete, we have a Jr. Training Program and Competition team that reaches National level. Other climbing opportunities for kids include: birthday parties, scouting events and the Kids Climb program every Sunday.
Top rope climbing is probably what pops into your head when you think of rock climbing. The climber ties in, while a person called the belayer controls the other end of the rope. With a reservation, we can set you up with a Staff Belayer(TEMPORARILY POSTPONED), who will manage the ropes for up to four(4) people for an hour or more. If you want to learn to belay, we offer two-hour Belay Classes(TEMPORARILY POSTPONED) several times per week for ages 15 and up. You'll learn knots, commands, belaying and basic climbing technique. Included with the class is a one-week trial membership, allowing you to come back and practice your skills with all the gear included! If you need a partner, check out our Partner Page for listings.
Not sure about heights, but intrigued by climbing? Bouldering may be the choice for you. Bouldering is where you climb to a moderate height protected by padding instead of ropes. It may look easy because of its modest height, but bouldering is an intense, powerful form of climbing that condenses the difficulty of an entire climb into a few hard moves. We are proud to say, The New Jersey Rock Gym has one of the best bouldering islands in the country.
