Add-On Comp at NJ Rock Gym

NJ Rock Gym is holding a monthly Add-On Rock Climbing Tournament.

A Fun, Competitive Climbing Game for All Skill Levels

Add-On is a creative and challenging climbing game that uses existing routes in the gym to build new sequences. It’s typically played between two climbers and is a great way to push your skills while having fun.

Here’s how it works:
One player chooses the starting hold(s) – any holds both climbers can use to get off the ground. The second player then begins at that position and adds two hand moves (one with each hand). Feet are open – any footholds can be used.

Each round, players alternate turns, repeating the full sequence and adding two new hand moves each time. The game continues until the route becomes too long or a player can’t complete the added moves.

Our Monthly Add-On Tournament follows a double elimination, head-to-head format. Once a winner is declared, we give out awesome prizes:

  • The overall winner chooses first
  • Every game you win earns you a raffle ticket for more prize chances!

This event is open to both new and experienced climbers – it’s all about community, creativity, and a good time!

Date: Held every 4th Thursday of the month
Time: Sign up by 6 PM at the front desk

  • The zone for each round will be selected using the wheel.

  • Players will play Rock, Paper, Scissors to determine who chooses the starting hold and makes the first move.

  • Using two starting holds is allowed.

  • If the chosen start hold can’t be used with a controlled move, the opponent selects the start hold and makes the opening move.

  • Matching hands on the same hold is not allowed.

  • Feet are open – any footholds may be used.

Control & Completion

  • All moves must be completed with CONTROL.

    • To show control, the climber must hold the position for at least 3 seconds and remove the previous hand without falling.

  • Climbers are allowed one failed attempt during their turn to add moves.

    • A second failed attempt in the same match results in a loss.

  • Falling during the established sequence results in a loss for that round.

Sequence & Features

  • A round ends when a climber falls or fails to complete the correct sequence – stay focused!

  • If a feature (e.g. a volume) or a hold on a feature is used, the next climber must use it in the same way.

Tournament Format

  • Opening rounds are single elimination – best of 1 game.

  • The final round will be best 2 out of 3.
